Dialogue A
A: What took you so long? The manager's furious.
B: There was an accident on the motorway, and the traffic was unbelievably slow. It took me three hours to get here.
A: Oh, yeah, I just heard the news on the radio - that there was a serious accident with three cars and a bus. Now, quick, get these papers, make copies and send them to our partners. Mrs. Lewis has been asking where
they are.
B: Right. Hope she will forgive me.
A: Anyway, it's good that you’ve arrived safe and sound.
Dialogue B
A: Late again, Jim.
B: Sorry, Ms West. I overslept. My alarm didn't go off this morning. I promise, it will never, ever happen again.
A: Unfortunately, it’s not a new story, Jim. It happens almost every week, even twice a week sometimes.
B: I know but I did set the alarm last night, honestly. I don’t know what happened.
A: Perhaps you should buy a new one. Now…, take your seat and open your book at page twelve. We’re discussing the article on traffic congestion.
Dialogue C
A: Oh, my goodness, the traffic is so slow. It’s driving me mad! We've been in this traffic jam for an hour already.
B: Calm down. I think there's an accident ahead. We can’t do anything about it.
A: Can I open the window - it's getting hot in here.
B: Sure. But turn down the music. It's too loud.
A: Why don't we take a different route? I'll look at the map and see what we can do.
Dialogue D
A: I can't believe how bad the weather is today!
B: Yes, according to the weather report, we will be flying through a pretty nasty storm.
A: Won’t they cancel the flight? I don't really like flying in this kind of weather.
B: Cancel? No. Boarding has already been announced. Don’t worry. Usually the pilot gets enough altitude to fly above it. I am sure everything will be fine.
A: I hope so.
A—2 The manager's furious....get these papers, make copies and send them to our partners.
B—5 Sorry, Ms West. I overslept...take your seat and open your book at page twelve.
C—3 the traffic is so slow...traffic jam... Why don't we take a different route?
D—1 Won’t they cancel the flight? Boarding has already been announced.

Speaker A. I like family celebrations, when several generations gather around the table and talk and exchange news. My grandmother and I usually make a large apple pie. Everyone in the family loves it. It’s a traditional recipe. To make the apples taste fresh and stay crispy we add some lemon juice with sugar and vanilla. It’s also important to take the pie out of the iron in time.
Speaker B. it was warm and sunny last weekend and we were glad to spend a couple of days outdoors. We went to a bus trip in a nearby town famous for its parks and a large fruit garden. The garden looks fantastic and most of the apple trees are in blossom. In a café we enjoyed some fruit tea with the delicious apple pie.
Speaker C. I used to do swimming and cycling but now I’ve got new interests in life. I start drawing. I go to the art school and I like it very much. Today we drew a still life. There are different things like fruits, flowers and other house art objects. We drew a vase with apples. I never thought it could be so difficult to make the apples look realistic on the picture.
Speaker D. my mom always says that the food we eat should be not only tasty but good for our bodies too. That’s why she includes lot’s of fruits and vegetables in our menu. She prefers local season fruits to exotic ones. And believes that there is nothing better than green apples from our garden. An apple a day keeps a doctor away, she says. And I think she is right.
Speaker E. when I was little I spent lots of time in my granny’s. she and her neighbour had large gardens which makes the village look fantastic. I wanted to be a gardener to take care of flowers, cherry and apple trees as I enjoyed it very much. I also wanted to grew some more beautiful flower and give it my grannies name – Nancy. But that never came true. I work as a sales manager in a telephone company now.

Вопрос 10
To keep koalas as pets is very difficult.
1) True
2) False
3) Not stated
The koala is a small bear-like animal that looks like a soft toy. The animal is cute and non-aggressive, but it’s difficult to see a koala in the Zoo and no one ever keeps them as pets. Why is it so?
The main reason why people shouldn’t try to take koalas out from their natural home is their diet. It’s a strict diet of eucalyptus leaves as koalas practically never eat anything else. In Australia there are over 600 types of eucalyptus, but koalas eat only 40–50 varieties with only about 10 being preferred. And even if you find the koala’s most favourite tree and plant it in your backyard, you won’t be able to supply your koala-pet with food anyway. The thing is that koalas eat only fresh young leaves, and the tree has few of them. So, to keep a koala happy and healthy, you would have to plant about 100 eucalyptus trees!
It’s difficult to explain why koalas love eucalyptus leaves so much. The leaves are tough and feel like rubber. They have very few calories and they are poisonous to most animals. Koalas, however, cope with such a diet easily. Nature has equipped them with specialised adaptations. Each koala eats approximately 200 to 500 grams of leaves per day. They are very slow eaters and they manage to get the maximum amount of energy from such a small amount of food. They also sleep for up to 18 hours per day in order to conserve energy.
Koalas spend all their lives on eucalyptus trees and they don’t have any need to leave them. Normally the animals don’t drink water as they receive it from the leaves. For this reason the koala got its name from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning “no drink”.
Koalas live in societies, just like humans, so they need to be able to come into contact with other koalas. They live in suitable eucalyptus forests which are large enough to support a healthy koala population and to allow for expansion by maturing young koalas. In spite of their peaceful and sleepy look, koalas are highly territorial animals and don’t allow strangers to approach their “home trees” and “food trees”.
A female koala gives birth to only one baby in one or two years. It's hairless, blind and very little – about 2 cms long! It gets into the mother's pouch – a special pocket of skin on the stomach – and stays there for six or seven months. Then it gets out of the pouch but stays with the mother until it's about one year old. Koalas are slow-breeding animals and their population can't grow fast. The animals were in danger of extinction at the beginning of the 20th century when the koala was hunted for its fur. Fortunately, the population has been restored and today the Australian government doesn't consider the koala as endangered.

You have 30 minutes to do this task. You have received a letter from your English–speaking pen friend Ben.
...A friend of mine invited me to his birthday party but I wasn’t able to accept the invitation because I have no time even at weekends. I find learning very difficult and everything's going wrong these days. I’ve even missed my school bus two times this week...
...How do you normally get to school? What school subjects do you find most difficult? What is your favourite day of the week and why?...

Dear Ben,
Thanks for your letter, it is great to hear from you. I'm sorry I couldn't answer you earlier, I had some urgent work to do. I'm quite familiar with your situation, not so long ago learning was a nightmare for me too, especially learning maths, which is still the most difficult subject for me. Speaking of your school bus, you might want to double your alarms and ask your parents to wake you up just in case. As for me, I walk to school most of the time. I have being late and trust only myself with this. Still, I don't like it all too much, so my favourite day of the week is sunday, when I do not need to go anywhere.
Write back soon.
Best wishes,
Michael

You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.
Studies of the atmosphere first received technical support in 1912. Equipment to measure temperature and pressure was invented in Germany. But the question was how to raise it high into the air. In 1921, Russian engineers suggested using planes. The special equipment was put on planes that made regular flights. Thanks to this, scientists got a lot of new information about the structure of the atmosphere. Nowadays scientists use modern flying laboratories to study the structure of clouds at different levels. Unlike the first planes, these laboratories can work in any weather and are able to predict climate changes.

SAMPLE CONVERSATION
S: Hello, Barbara/Bob!
I: Hello!
S: Look, could I ask you for a favour?
I: Yes, what is it?
S: It’s nearly the end of our course and I want to make a PowerPoint presentation about our group. Could I borrow your camera to take some photos in class?
I: Sure. The photos will remind you about the time in our language school. And what does your school day in Russia look like? Do you spend much time studying?
S: Oh, yes! Our first class starts at half past eight and we normally have six or even seven lessons a day. Each lesson lasts forty minutes with short breaks between them. We have only one long, thirty-minute break at half past twelve for lunch and some relaxation. When classes are over, we can either go home or stay in school for after-class activities, which are optional.
I: What sort of activities are they?
S: We do sports, attend art classes, stage plays in our Drama Club and lots of other things.
I: You have an interesting school life. I usually go to the swimming pool after classes, just to keep fit. What do young people in your place do to keep fit?
S: Well, there are lots of sports facilities in our town. There’s a large swimming pool, a stadium and several sports grounds. In summer we cycle and in winter we ski and skate. There are several public gyms not far from my house but I never go to them. I prefer exercising in the open air or in the school gym.
I: I see. And do you try to follow any diet or not?
S: Not really. I try to avoid eating too much junk food like chips, sweets, and fizzy drinks, but I don’t follow any particular diet.
I: Neither do I. And all this talking about food makes me feel really hungry. How about some lunch in our cafeteria?
S: Thank you, Barbara/Bob, but I can’t. And it’s not because I worry too much about healthy eating – my class starts in a few minutes and I really have to go.
I: Oh, I see.
S: See you soon!
I: See you.

You are going to give a talk about shopping. You will have to start in 1,5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences). Remember to say:
— what types of shops you know;
— how often you go shopping with your family;
— what type of shops you like most of all;
— what type of shopping you prefer (online/offline). Why?
You have to talk continuously.
Пояснение
There are many kinds of shops in every city. People go to various types if they need something in particular. We go to a butcher`s for meat, a baker`s for bread, a greengrocer`s for fruit and vegetables, a grocer`s for sugar, tea, salt, coffee. I am a sweet tooth and I really like to go to a confectioner`s.
Nowadays small shops are not so popular, as you can go to a big mall or a department store and find all possible kinds of food and goods there. Various supermarkets offer people everything they need to buy.
My family goes to the supermarket every weekend. We usually go there on Saturday or Sunday and buy everything we need for a week or at least a few days. The choice of goods in local supermarkets is impressive and we usually enjoy our family shopping.
I prefer big department stores,as I like buying clothes, books and cosmetics. I fully realize that online shopping is convenient nowadays, but I prefer to see and touch the goods in real life.
