Dialogue A.
A: It's good you're in. Aren't you going out today?
B: No. I want to have a quiet evening watching TV.
A: Have you had a hard day?
B: Yeah, sort of. A cup of tea would make me feel much better.
A: Ok, I'll make it right now. Will you help me in the kitchen later?
Dialogue В.
A: Did you hear what he said?
B: No. Something about a tea party. That actor speaks so quietly. I have to make an effort to understand what he says.
A: It's irritating, isn't it? And the play is really boring.
B: I'm disappointed too. I don't like either the plot or the actors. Next time we'll see some classical comedy or drama.
A: Yeah, the classics are probably safer.
Dialogue С.
A: Are you sure they are going to give us some lunch? I'm really hungry.
B: Don't worry. As soon as we reach the altitude needed for the flight, they'll offer us drinks: tea, coffee, water or juice. And then you'll get your plastic lunch tray.
A: You look so relaxed. Don't you feel nervous?
B: Why should I? I often have to fly... If I worried each time, I would end up with a nervous breakdown. ... And ... our tea's coming...
Dialogue D.
A: Excuse me but did I get it correctly? ... My train has just left and the next one will be in three hours?
В: I'm sorry, sir, but that's correct.
A: And what am I going to do here? Three hours — it's loads of time!
В: I don't really know. And you can have some tea and doughnuts in our cafe or have a walk along the street. But don't be late for the next train!
A−2: It's good you're in. Aren't you going out today? B: No. I want to have a quiet evening watching TV.
B−5: And the play is really boring. B: I'm disappointed too. I don't like either the plot or the actors.
C−3: As soon as we reach the altitude needed for the flight, they'll offer us drinks: tea, coffee, water or juice.
D−1: My train has just left and the next one will be in three hours?

Now we are ready to start.
Speaker A
I’m very fond of fast food. Yet, these days I don’t eat it because I’m trying to lose weight. Every evening I decide what to have the next day. Then I make notes in my eating diary. For example, tomorrow I’ll have porridge for breakfast, soup and fish for lunch and some meat salad for
dinner. I take my little food organizer with me everywhere. It helps me stick to a balanced diet and eat the right food at the right time.
Speaker B
In class I dream about having something delicious for lunch. But I dislike the dishes in the cafeteria. The food they serve is really awful - the hot dogs and pizzas taste like rubber. I’m not keen on cheeseburgers, greasy fries and cold pasta either. I know it is hard to make food for so
many students and suit everybody's taste. But they really should do something to improve the menu.
Speaker C
I prefer eating at home. I don’t like hamburgers, hot dogs and chips much, anyway, soups, salads, chops and vegetables are always much better at home than in a café or canteen. When you cook for yourself, you can be sure that the ingredients you use are fresh. Another good thing is that you can add as much salt, pepper or sugar as you want, to your taste, not to the taste of other people.
Speaker D
Some people have very wrong ideas about fast food. They believe that fast food is convenient, cheap and safe. But it’s not safe at all! Fast food often has ingredients that are dangerous for your body. It’s also addictive, that is you get used to it and can’t do without it. Fast food contains lots of fat and has too many calories. It makes people overweight and causes heart problems.
Speaker E
I’ve always enjoyed homemade dishes and I want my family to eat tasty and healthy food. To me, cooking is an art and I always follow the same rules when I cook. First I turn on my favourite music. Then I prepare all the ingredients I need to make the dish and display them on the table. After that I start cooking and I hate being interrupted by telephone calls or by someone from my family. When the dish is ready, I always decorate it with pieces of vegetables or dried fruit - depending on the dish.
A−3: Then I make notes in my eating diary. For example, tomorrow I’ll have ... I take my little food organizer with me everywhere.
B−6: In class I dream about having something delicious for lunch. But I dislike the dishes in the cafeteria.
C−5: I prefer eating at home. I don’t like hamburgers, hot dogs and... When you cook for yourself, you can be sure that the ingredients you use are fresh.
D−4: Fast food often has ingredients that are dangerous for your body. It’s also addictive, that is you get used to it and can’t do without it.
E−2: To me, cooking is an art and I always follow the same rules when I cook. First I turn on my favourite music. Then I prepare all the ingredients...

Kevin: Hi! I’m Kevin. Can I sit here?
Kate: Yes, sure.
Kevin: And what’s your name?
Kate: Kate.
Kevin: Is this your first visit to Paris?
Kate: Yes, I’m from Canada and this is my first visit to Europe or anywhere else. I’ve never been abroad before and everything seems very exciting. And where are youfrom?
Kevin: From Liverpool. My family’s lived in that part of England for ages and we seldom travel anywhere either.
Kate: My parents are completely different; they travel a lot because of their job, but they’ve never taken me with them.
Kevin: I see.
Kate: But this time we are travelling all together as a family. Today we are going to have a guided excursion of the historical part of Paris. Are you here on your own?
Kevin: No. It’s a school trip. The whole class are here and two teachers to supervise us.
Kate: Oh, it must be interesting travelling in a large group.
Kevin: Yeah. We were awarded this trip when we won the city competition.
Kate: Was it a sports competition?
Kevin: No, it was a competition for school rock bands.
Kate: You’re a musician?
Kevin: Sort of. In our band I play the drums.
Kate: Do you see music as your career? Everyone nowadays wants to be either a celebrity or a computer genius.
Kevin: Not in my case. Music is just for fun. I’m deeply interested in physics and biology. I think that absolutely fantastic discoveries are awaiting us in these fields. They could completely change our idea of the universe and of ourselves.
Kate: So, you want to do scientific research?
Kevin: Exactly.
Kate: But that means getting a very good education…
Kevin: Yes. This is my last year at school and I hope to start my university course this summer. I’ve got good grades and it makes my plan sound quite realistic.
Kate: Yes, it looks like a good one. You seemto have planned your life very well. I can’t even make up my mind on what souvenirs to buy for my friends back home…
Kevin: I’ve found a shop with some old photos of the city. I bought several pictures there as gifts for my friends. They’re not expensive and the images are lovely.
Kate: Yeah, I think that would be better than heavy souvenir mugs or T-shirts with prints. Could you tell me where the shop is?
From Liverpool. My family’s lived in that part of England for ages.

1. What is it like to run a marathon?
2. How can one get ready for a marathon ?
3. Who runs just for fun?
4. Who supports the runners?
5. Can the landscape help the runners?
6. How did it start?
7. How can one be sure of the winners?
A. Many cities in the United States hold marathons. The city of Chicago, Illinois, has its marathon once a year. The running area in Chicago is almost absolutely flat. The scenery is amazingly beautiful. This fact has helped some runners set some of the world’s fastest times there. Many of them hope to go back again.
B. Some people know that they have no chance of winning but they participate anyway. They are not officially registered for the race — they just start running with the crowd. These runners are called “bandits.” Many of them finish the race hours after the serious runners but they are happy to cross the finish line anyway.
C. Recently, a British writer and journalist, Mario Roter, ran in a marathon. He thought it would be fun to write an article about what people felt during the race. Later he said that running forty-two kilometers was no fun. Many people agree that there is no pleasure in running a marathon, but afterwards it feels great to know that you have done it.
D. People usually start training for a marathon in early spring. They run often and gradually increase the length of their runs from eight to twelve and even to twenty kilometers. At this point it is necessary to build up the needed strength. In the months before the race, the average participant runs a total of more than eight hundred kilometers.
E. Usually there are lots of runners. The line of people stretches back hundreds of meters. As the winners are awarded prize money it is important to avoid cheating. In order to track all the participants, special chips are used. When the participants register for the marathon, they get their identification number and computer chips. The chips are activated at the start of the race and keep time.
F. A marathon is usually a big public event. In the city where the marathon is held hundreds of people give their time and effort to make the race possible. The city police block traffic on the main roads. Some runners thank the officers as they run by. Every few kilometers there are volunteers who offer water to the runners. Lots of people cheer.

From Russia with love
The followers of my blog may be interested to know that starting from now I'll be sharing my experience of living and working in a new country. Right at this moment, I, Andrew Carter, am writing my blog from a very remote place in Russia.
When I accepted the offer of the international ecological group to take part in the project in the Russian North, I never expected the experience would be so amazing. As a professional ecologist I have worked in different parts of the world, but never in Russia. A trip to the north region of the country looked really challenging. Now I see that it is a very special place. My journey is to last for two months and now I wish I could stay here longer. Two months are definitely not enough to enjoy the beauty of this place, which is called the Kenozersky National Park.
Anyway, my adventures started two weeks ago. Patrick and I landed in Moscow at 10am in the morning and our plane to Arkhangelsk was at 11pm so we had the whole day to see Moscow. We did not need to stay in a hotel at that.
My first impression was that, well, Moscow is a huge city! My colleague, Patrick, who’s visited Moscow several times already, told me that the best way to get some idea of the Russian capital was to take a bus excursion round the city. And he was right!
We managed to see the historical centre, and walked across Red Square. I have to confess that I’ve never seen a square so huge and grand. Then the bus took us along the wide streets and avenues. We made a brief stop near the famous Russian university - the Moscow State University. I had certainly seen the building in the photos, but in real life it looks even more impressive.
When the excursion was over, we found ourselves in the centre again. We still had plenty of time and decided to visit the State Historical Museum that is on Red Square. We only managed to see a small part of the vast collection of the museum. Its exhibitions range from relics of prehistoric tribes that lived on the territory of present-day Russia centuries ago to priceless pieces of art that belonged to the Romanov dynasty.
After the intense cultural programme, we were just walking along the streets. Then we dropped into a small restaurant and ordered some national dishes. They tasted unfamiliar, but I liked them.
The next day we got to our destination.
Kenozersky National Park is exactly at the border of the Arkhangelsk Oblast and Karelia. The park is centred round the Lake Kenozero, one or the largest lakes in the region. The Russian colleagues met us at Arkhangelsk airport and drove us to the place where we were to live and work for two months. It was a long drive but it was worth it!
As I’ve already mentioned, the national park is a very remote place. Three quarters of its territory is covered with taiga. The environment is untouched, and we were charmed by its beauty. The park is inhabited by a great variety of animals and birds. Some of them are extremely rare species. It’s actually a paradise for a person who studies nature!
However, the place is not only interesting for nature lovers like me. In spite of the remoteness of the place, there are tourists from all over the world here. They are charmed by the wooden architecture of the region. There are many authentic wooden houses and churches with wonderful painted ceilings. Some tourists, including the people from America and Asia, come specially to attend carpentry courses and workshops, where skilled craftsmen teach them to make traditional wooden toys, furniture, and home decorations. Some of their works are real pieces of art.
I have to stop now as we are setting off to the lake. The story is to be continued…

You have 30 minutes to do this task. You have received a letter from your English–speaking pen friend Ben.
…Yes, I remember about your invitation to visit your city! And I’m happy to tell you that I’ll probably come to your country sometime next year. I’d be very grateful for any useful information or advice which could help me to arrange this trip...
...What is the best season for visiting your city, and why? What clothes would you recommend taking for the journey? What is the most convenient means of transport in your city?...

Write her a letter and answer his 3 questions. Write 100–120 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.
Пояснение
St. Petersburg, Russia
June, 25
Dear Ben,
Thanks for your letter, it is great to hear from you. I'm sorry I couldn't answer you earlier, I had some urgent work to do. It's awesome that you're coming to Russia. The best season to come to St. Petersburg is probably early summer. The weather is mostly warm and there are so-called White Nights which are an immensely beautiful sight you should definitely see. However, the temperatures can easily drop down to ten degrees Celsius even at summer, so take those autumn clothes with you. Asfor the transport, although I do not like our subway (we call it Metro here), it is, hands down, the most convenient means of transport that can get you almost anywhere around the city within an hour. I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Write back soon.
Best wishes,
Michael

You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.
Most people enjoy watching the night sky. And the brightest object in the sky is the Moon. Every night the Moon rises in the East and sets in the West. It takes about 27 days to go around the Earth, and it’s an interesting fact that we always see the same side of the Moon. The Moon is the closest object to the Earth. It would take us only 13 hours to get to the Moon by rocket. If we were able to travel at the speed of light, it would take a bit less than two seconds.
There is a very thin atmosphere on the Moon. Life is not possible there. In spite of this, the Moon can be used as a base for space exploration and even for space tourism. Some space companies say that they will be able to take tourists to the Moon as soon as in 2020.

SAMPLE CONVERSATION
Student: Hello, Nicolas / Nicole. It's nice to see you.
Interlocutor: Hi! I'm glad to see you, too.
Student: Have you taken the end-of-course test yet?
Interlocutor: Yes, I have. But I don't know my grade yet. And have you taken yours?
Student: Not yet. We are taking it tomorrow, at nine o'clock sharp.
Interlocutor: I see. I actually prefer oral exams to taking written tests. And you?
Student: I prefer taking written tests.
Interlocutor: Why?
Student: I usually feel very nervous when I have to talk in an exam. I often forget everything I know and that's why I usually get lower grades than I actually deserve. But when we take written tests, I have enough time to calm down and to remember everything.
Interlocutor: Yes, I see your point. And what school subject do you find the most difficult?
Student: Physics and Maths. I'm not very good at remembering figures and I make mistakes in calculations. It's also difficult to understand and remember some processes in Physics.
Interlocutor: And how do you feel about tomorrow's test? Are you very worried?
Student: No, not really. I think I'm ready for it.
Interlocutor: How about a little party then? We want to celebrate the end of the course. Will you come?
Student: Thank you, but not tonight. I want to get to bed early and have a good sleep before the test.
Interlocutor: OK, I understand. Good luck with the test.
Student: Thank you. See you tomorrow.
Interlocutor: See you.

You are going to give a talk about theatre and cinema. You will have to start in 1,5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences). Remember to say:
— what kind of entertainment( cinema/theatre) is more popular now;
— what famous Russian theatre you know;
— why people like going to the cinema;
— what your favourite theatre /cinema is. Why?
You have to talk continuously.
Пояснение
Various kinds of entertainment are popular now, but theatre is surely less popular than cinema. Theatre lost a great deal of its attraction not only because of the popularity of cinema and the number of websites where you can watch some videos online, but also because the tickets are very expensive. As a result a visit to any of famous theatres has become a luxury for the majority of people.
However, I believe that the theatre is an inseparable part of intellectual life of our country. There are some world-famous theatres in Russia. People who prefer theatre to cinema are called theatre-goers, and they can every time find a theatre according to their tastes. Those, who love opera and ballet go to Mariinsky opera house or Maly opera house. People fond of drama visit the Bolshoi Drama Theatre and Alexandrinsky Theatre. Musical lovers go to Music Hall.
A lot of new theatres and studios appear every year. I understand that nowadays one can choose a something that will meet all the tastes.
I am not a regular theatregoer, but I sometimes go to Musical Hall. It is not only because of its festive atmosphere, but also the interior, wonderful company and interesting performances. I try to follow my friends` and parents` recommendations when I choose which ticket to buy. I have never regretted doing so, as my friends and parents know a lot about theatre and enjoy this kind of entertainment. Sometimes a good comedy helps in getting rid of negative emotions, so going to the theatre absolutely worth it.
