Speaker A. What is something that really troubles me? Well, like everyone else these days I worry about earning enough to pay my monthly bills, my rent and all the other current living expenses. I’ want to be secure for the future and make sure I will have everything I need and maybe start saving some money. I am so afraid of losing everything I own.
Speaker В. What do I worry about? Oh, about a lot of different things — money, politics, the weather. But my greatest concern is my mum and dad. I have a good job with a foreign firm and I am living overseas at the moment. I am so worried about them. I’m afraid they won’t be able to deal with all their problems. If anything happens to them when I’m away, I won’t be able to come back home quickly enough to help.
Speaker С. I think my biggest worry today is my career. I’m 26 now and I’ve spent the last few years travelling. Most of my university friends have settled down. They work hard and have made a good start to their careers. So I began to worry that when I go back home I will be too old for companies to want me. What shall I do then? That’s a tough question. I do not want to be unemployed.
Speaker D. Every time I look in the mirror I feel nervous. I am afraid of getting fat as I love pizza and hamburgers. I like shopping a lot and always buy sweets. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it. Like any other woman in her thirties, I am really afraid of gaining extra kilograms.
But I just can’t say “no” to cakes and sweets. Who can?!
Speaker Е. What am I afraid of? Well, recently I visited a friend of mine in Shanghai and she made a comment that I thought was very interesting. She said I look as though I have plenty of money. I don’t, but compared to ordinary people in the street I look like I have a lot of money. I am really afraid of someone thinking that I have a lot of money and trying to rob me, especially if they have a gun. I have a little bit of paranoia about guns and robbers.
Speaker F. I guess I worry about the usual things, like getting in shape for the summer or being healthy and fit. I think being healthy is the most important thing. So I exercise regularly and watch what I eat. You know it’s all about getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals, and fibre. I need this body to last at least another fifty years.
A−2: I want to be secure for the future and make sure I will have everything I need and maybe start saving some money.
B−4: But my greatest concern is my mum and dad.
C−7: I think my biggest worry today is my career.
D−1: I am afraid of getting fat .
E−3: I have a lot of money and trying to rob me, especially if they have a gun. I have a little bit of paranoia about guns and robbers.
F−5: I guess I worry about the usual things, like getting in shape for the summer or being healthy and fit.I need this body to last at least another fifty years.

Brenda: Oh, hi Tom. Haven’t seen you for ages. They say you became a
successful doctor...
Tom: Hi Brenda. Who told you that? I’m just a surgical engineer.
Brenda: How do you mean?
Tom: I work for a company that produces extremely specialized surgical
instruments.
Brenda: Right then, Tom. Your job is a complete mystery to me. I'm a complete
idiot in scientific matters, so can you explain, as simply as possible, what you do?
Tom: Of course. I'll try! Well, our company produces surgical equipment. That is
different from medical equipment. By medical equipment we mean thermometers,
machines to measure heart beats and so on. We don't do that - all our equipment
is used for surgery.
Brenda: You mean knives, things like that?
Tom: (laughs) No... actually not quite as simple as that. In the old days, yes, if a
person had, say, cancer, the answer was usually to open them up and cut out the
cancerous tissue. This approach is used less and less nowadays, and that's where
our products come in. We specialise either in cryo-surgical instruments...
Brenda: Sorry, you'll have to explain that.
Tom: OK. Cryo-surgery basically means destroying diseased cells by freezing
them. Once the doctor has identified the malignant cells, the surgeon will insert an
instrument that freezes them, at temperatures as low as minus 75°. These
instruments are incredibly delicate and have to be extremely precise. They usually
look like a long, thin tube - sometimes as thin as 0.9mm.
Brenda: I see...
Tom: The other area we specialise in is ultrasonic surgery. Here the surgeon will
insert a titanium rod which oscillates, vibrates, at the very high frequency of
35MHz. This literally hammers the malignant tissue until it is destroyed.
Brenda: Fascinating. And what is your part in all this?
Tom: Well, my official job title is 'Project Engineer'. The way it usually goes is
this: a surgeon comes to us and says,"I think I can freeze a particular type of
cancer, and I think I can do it by doing this and doing that. Can you design a tool
that will let me do it?" I'm in charge of a team of draughtsmen who have to
design the instrument, and of mechanical and electronic engineers who will create
it. I have to oversee the whole process, and make sure that we are obeying all the
regulations, which are very strict in the making of surgical instruments.
A1 — Haven’t seen you for ages.
B3 — В тексте ничего об этом не сказано.
C2 —Your job is a complete mystery to me. I'm a complete idiot in scientific matters.
D2 — Well, our company produces surgical equipment. That is different from medical equipment.
E1 — We specialise either in cryo-surgical instruments...Cryo-surgery basically means destroying diseased cells by freezing them... the surgeon will insert an instrument that freezes them, at temperatures as low as minus 75°.
F3 — В тексте ничего об этом не сказано.

Presenter: My guests tonight are Robert and Amy who play the main characters in the TV series “The Royal”. The couple married two years ago although like their screen pair they didn’t seem destined to be together.
Presenter: So, Robert and Amy, how did your romance actually begin?
Robert: It was never anything as formal as me asking Amy to eat out in an expensive restaurant. We worked together every day and it was nothing, nothing but a friendship for many, many months. Then, I can honestly say, one day we just looked at each other and we knew. I had a feeling as if I saw Amy for the first time. Love’s a funny thing, isn’t it? You don’t have to use words to know what’s happening. We just knew one day and went from there.
Presenter: Robert, how did you propose?
Robert: I booked a surprise trip to Madrid and I sort of knew that I was going to propose that week, but I had no idea where I would actually do it. Then we passed this most fabulous square with amazing fountains in a taxi and I thought, ‘That’s it’. Later on, I suggested that we walk back
after lunch. We got to the square and I proposed to her by the fountains. I so wanted to do it correctly, suitably for the purpose. I was incredibly nervous — what if she said ‘No?’ I was delighted when she said ‘Yes’. It was wonderful.
Presenter: In next season’s opening episode of the Royal, your characters marry. Did it evoke memories of your own wedding?
Robert: There was a huge explosion during our screen wedding — luckily for us the incident only happened on the screen! But both were fabulous settings. On screen it was a church in Scarborough. Our own wedding was in the sculpture gallery at Woburn. There was a feeling of dejavu, because we had a lot of people at our wedding who also appeared to be guests at the screen wedding ceremony. So many of the cast came to our wedding — and Amy’s parents Liz and Mike were supporting artists on The Royal wedding,
so it was a bit weird.
Presenter: Amy, my next question is to you. What is it about each other that you love?
Amy: Our family backgrounds are very similar — he’s one of four children and I’m one of five- and we have similar aspirations for family life. He is the kindest man I know and a friend I can rely on. He is the best in every way. He’s open-minded and I’m trying very hard to be as open-minded as he is.
Presenter: Do you enjoy working together?
Amy: I was always close to my mum and when I was at school I used to be so sad about leaving her for the day. I used to fantasise about her being a teacher or the headmistress at school so I could be with her. I sort of compare working with Bob to that. It’s the greatest comfort to work with him.
Presenter: You are from a theatrical family, Amy. Were you always going to act?
Amy: My parents were entertaining at Butlins and my sister Kate is an actress, my brother Ted is a comedian, so entertainment is in the family. We’ve all gone into the entertainment business somehow. My parents have always been understanding and supportive of their children. They encouraged us to explore our own interestes but in spite of all this I think I would have been treated as a failure by them if I hadn’t acted!
Presenter: I know you have recently become a mother. What is the best thing about parenthood?
Amy: I’ve always played the role of a mum in my films and actually being one is everything I have always wanted. It’s a most fantastic thing. I wake up early every day only to make sure that this little miniature person is there. It’s a joy. Whatever life throws at you, having a child, your little best friend beside you, means you can get through anything.
Presenter: And what does the future hold?
Amy: More of the same, we hope. More of The Royal and more children!

The wedding ceremony in the film reminded Robert and Amy of their own wedding because
1) both weddings took place in the same settings.
2) there was an explosion during both weddings.
3) there were some of the same people at both weddings.

I think I would have been treated as a failure by them if I hadn’t acted.

1. A step to a wider variety
2. Varieties of theatre
3. Modern problems
4. Theatre and politics
5. Origin of theatre
6. Ladies enter
7. Not the least important
8. Stars for a repertoire
A. Modern Western theatre comes in large measure from ancient Greek drama, from which it takes technical terminology, classification into genres, and many of its themes, stock characters, and plot elements. The Greeks also developed the concepts of dramatic criticism, acting as a career, and theatre architecture. The theatre of ancient Greece consisted of three types of drama: tragedy, comedy, and the satyr play.
B. Western theatre developed and expanded considerably under the Romans. The Roman historian Livy wrote that the Romans first experienced theatre in the 4th century BC. The theatre of ancient Rome was a thriving and diverse art form, ranging from festival performances of street theatre, nude dancing, and acrobatics, to the staging of broadly appealing situation comedies, to the highstyle, verbally elaborate tragedies.
C. Theatre took on many different forms in the West between the 15th and 19th centuries, including commedia dell’arte and melodrama. The general trend was away from the poetic drama of the Greeks and the Renaissance and toward a more naturalistic prose style of dialogue, especially following the Industrial Revolution. Theatre today, broadly defined, includes performances of plays and musicals, ballets, operas and various other forms.
D. The eighteenth century in Britain introduced women to the stage, which would have been extremely inappropriate before. These women were looked at as celebrities but on the other hand, it was still very new and revolutionary that they were on the stage and some said they were unladylike and looked down n. Charles II did not like young men playing the parts of young women, so he asked that women play their own parts.
E. Theatre took a big pause during 1642 and 1660 in England because of Cromwell’s Interregnum. Theatre was seen as something sinful and the Puritans tried very hard to drive it out of their society. Because of this stagnant period, once Charles II came back to the throne in 1660, theatre (among other arts) exploded because of a lot of influence from France, where Charles was in exile the years previous to his reign.
F. Stagecraft is a term referring to the technical aspects of theatrical, film, and video production. It includes constructing scenery, hanging and focusing of lighting, design and procurement of costumes, makeup, props, stage management, and recording and mixing of sound. Considered a technical rather than an artistic field, it is equally crucial for the practical implementation of a designer’s artistic idea.
G. While most modern theatre companies rehearse one piece of theatre at a time, perform that piece for a set “run”, retire the piece, and begin rehearsing a new show, repertory companies rehearse multiple shows at one time. Repertory theatre generally involves a group of similarly accomplished actors, and relies more on the reputation of the group than on an individual star actor.

How did the author feel about the beginning of her college life?
1) Disgusted.
2) Insecure.
3) Ready for new life.
4) Confident.
Start of college life: how I coped with fear
For the last two years I've been working really hard to pass all my exams successfully and to get accepted to college. And yet college seemed to be the scariest thing that I could think of. Whenever I thought about it, my stomach would immediately begin to spin in circles. Although I was ready to go off and be by myself and meet new people, I was scared to death at the same time. I pictured hard classes that I wouldn't be able to keep up with, people that wouldn't like me, long hikes to get to my classes, and horrible food. I couldn't imagine leaving the security of my own room, my own stuff where I want it, my friends that I've spent practically my whole life with, my family who put up with all my little quirks.
Everyone else that I talked to, however, didn't seem to have this problem. They all were thrilled at the thought of being on their own and not having to worry about their parents telling them what to do or not to do all the time. And, sure, the thought was extremely exciting to me as well, but how would I survive without my family and friends and the things that had taken me eighteen years to get used to?
The summer before I came to college was probably the most fun my friends and I ever had. We all knew that in September things would never be the same again and we had to make the most of it while we still could. As the end of August rolled around we knew that it was time to say goodbye and be on our way to our own independence. I packed up the memories of the last eighteen years of my life into about five suitcases and was ready to go. I still didn't feel like I was just as mature as my older college friends and I thought that I still looked like I was twelve years old.
We finally made it to the doors and began unloading my clothes and the eight million bags of food that my mom had packed for me. I still was unsure about sharing my room and not being able to have the privacy that I had back home. I was worried that the little habits that I had might annoy my roommate and that my roommate might have just as many annoying little habits that I might not be able to handle as well.
After I had all my things unpacked and put exactly where I wanted, my roommate and I decided to go around our hall and see whom we would be living with for the next two semesters. As we went around to different rooms and met different people my nervousness seemed to diminish. I began to realize that not everyone here knew everyone else and most were just as anxious and nervous about being here as I was. It worked. I started to feel better and was actually kind of excited about living here all by myself.
I still miss the security of living at home (and I wonder who would blame me for this feeling) and, most of all, home-cooked meals that are nonexistent here and the friends that I grew up with. But I know that we've all changed and those memories are just that - memories, no matter how pleasant they might be. And when times get too tough, my mom is just a phone call away. But I'm not too quick to call her and have her solve my problems. I've learned that I can usually work things out by myself. I'm glad that I've gone through these changes in myself and it makes me realize that I don't need to fear change, that it's just a part of life that everyone has to go through sometime.

How has becoming a college student changed the author?
1) She has learned how to make new friends.
2) She has become more attached to her mother.
3) She has become more independent.
4) She has got used to eating out.

You havе just rеcеivеd a lеttеr from your English-spеaking pеn-friеnd, Paula.
My friend and I have just decided to enter the "Go Green in the City" competition. We are going to create a project on the energy management. Have you ever taken part in green projects? What alternative forms of energy are developed in Russia? Do you prefer using public transport or a private car and why?
Last week I visited Granny who lives in Edinburgh...
Writе a lеttеr to Paula.
In your lеttеr
– answer her questions
– ask 3 questions about her trip
Write 100–140 words.
Remember the rules of letter writing.
Пояснение
St. Petersburg, Russia
Jule, 21
Dear Paula,
Thank you for your letter. I'm sorry for not writing you for so long. I had a lot of homework lately.
It’s very great that you created your own project! Personally I didn’t participate in green projects but a couple of my friends really like it. In Russia there are a lot of studies on sunlight energy and hopefully we will see the results soon. I like public transport because it’s cheaper than a car.
Anyway, you've mentioned a trip to your Granny. How many hours did you spend to reach Edinburgh? What did you do with Granny? How many days did your trip last?
I've got to go as my brother asks me to help him with his chores.
Write back soon.
Best wishes,
Sasha

Comment on one of the following statements.
1. Many people watch soap operas because they find them enjoyable and realistic.
2. Many people would prefer to work from home.
What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement? Write 200–250 words. Use the following plan:

− make a conclusion restating your position
Пояснение
Чтобы успешно написать высказывание с элементами рассуждения следует:
- строить высказывания в соответствии с предложенным планом;
- начинать введение с общего представления темы и предложения, отображающего ее проблемный характер;
- во введении необходимо перефразировать тему/проблему, используя синонимичные выражения;
- в основной части сначала высказать свое мнение и аргументировать его, затем представить точки зрения других людей и дать аргументацию, почему с ними не согласны;
- приводя контраргументы, отстаивая свою точку зрения, желательно использовать перифраз, синонимию;
- в заключительном абзаце еще раз указать на проблемный характер темы, показать, что вы способны видеть и другие точки зрения, тем не менее ваша кажется вам более убедительной;
- делить текст на абзацы, которые отражают содержательную и логическую структуру текста;
- сделать введение и заключение приблизительно одинаковыми по объему;
- разбить основную часть как минимум на два абзаца, приблизительно одинаковых по размеру;
-следить за тем, чтобы общий объем основной части был не меньше общего объема введения и заключения;
- особое внимание уделять средствам логической связи текста, как внутри предложения, так и между предложениями.
После выполнения задания уделите внимание проверке и подсчету количества слов (должно быть 200—250 слов).
Приведем пример эссе.
Soap operas are a somewhat sensitive issue when it comes to TV nowadays. Some say they are enjoyable and realistic, others argue that they are a worthless means of wasting time.
I tend to agree with the latter for two main reasons. The first one is the fact that their quality as a form of art is mediocre at best. They almost never demostrate a reasonably good acting performance or a well-made plot since their budgets are mostly quite low. The second is that they are ridiculously long, so even if you got interested in one after first ten or twenty episodes, you are bound to lose your ineterest after two hundred of them, or tho thousand in case of the famous Santa Barbara soap opera.
However, there are people that think the joy of soap operas comes from the fact they represent average people's lives and the viewers find themselves in the series' heroes.
I can't agree with them, though. It is a matter of taste, but I personally do not feel the realism even if the plot is entirely based on a true story and the acting is immaculate, which is, as mentioned earlier, almost never the case with those soap operas.
To conclude, it is safe to say that soap operas are a type of low quality series that are only good for wasting time and nothing more.

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.
Because birds have such fine eyesight, they are hard to approach. Bird watchers use binoculars to study birds. One way to watch them up close without using binoculars is to go to a place they go to often. Sit still, keep quiet, and wait until they come. Soon they will be doing things all around you.
You may get too close to the animals you are watching. Always stay at a distance that is easy for them and for you. Do not disturb nesting birds. And never approach an animal that is with its young. Wild animal parents can be very protective. If you come upon a baby animal that looks like it’s alone, let it be. Mother may be watching you from a hiding place nearby.
Do not touch or corner a wild animal. Never follow an animal into places you don’t know. There is no such thing as a tame wild animal.

I’ve chosen photo number 3. I would like to tell you more about this picture. I enjoy exploring the culture of other countries. On such trips I learn lots of interesting facts and some of them change my attitude to life. Anyway, I took the photo in the local city when I first saw those dazzling elephants. It was a second day of my trip. In the foreground of the picture four men are sitting on the backs of giant elephants. In the background of the picture tourists are gathering to see the speactacular show. Elephants were the part of an entertainement program on the public holiday. Despite the size of those creatures they are shy and cautious. But if you treat them well they answer you back with the same attitude. I keep the photo in my album because the greatness of those animals amazed me. Also those creatures are very smart. I decided to show the photo to you because you always said that elephants are evil and hideous living beings. But it is not true at all. I hope that you liked the picture that I showed you.

In the picture number 1 we can see a young woman cooking. Perhaps, she is preparing a dinner for her boyfriend. She is wearing shorts and a shirt. She is blond and very beautiful. In the second one we can see another girl, who is wearing a snowboarding suit and a snowboard on her legs. She also has a mask, gloves and a hat.
I can say that these two pictures are having much in common. They both are showing us young woman. Both of them are related with timespending.
But there is a difference as well. In the picture on the left we see a girl at home, making dinner and being a good housewife, on the right – a good example of an active timespending. Another difference is that the girl on the right is outside, while a blond on the left is in the kitchen.
As for me, I’d prefer being on the right. It´s not because I don´t like cooking, it´s just because I prefer spend my time activelly and I do snowboarding much better than preparing food.
