Dialogue A
A: What took you so long? The manager's furious.
B: There was an accident on the motorway, and the traffic was unbelievably slow. It took me three hours to get here.
A: Oh, yeah, I just heard the news on the radio - that there was a serious accident with three cars and a bus. Now, quick, get these papers, make copies and send them to our partners. Mrs. Lewis has been asking where
they are.
B: Right. Hope she will forgive me.
A: Anyway, it's good that you’ve arrived safe and sound.
Dialogue B
A: Late again, Jim.
B: Sorry, Ms West. I overslept. My alarm didn't go off this morning. I promise, it will never, ever happen again.
A: Unfortunately, it’s not a new story, Jim. It happens almost every week, even twice a week sometimes.
B: I know but I did set the alarm last night, honestly. I don’t know what happened.
A: Perhaps you should buy a new one. Now…, take your seat and open your book at page twelve. We’re discussing the article on traffic congestion.
Dialogue C
A: Oh, my goodness, the traffic is so slow. It’s driving me mad! We've been in this traffic jam for an hour already.
B: Calm down. I think there's an accident ahead. We can’t do anything about it.
A: Can I open the window - it's getting hot in here.
B: Sure. But turn down the music. It's too loud.
A: Why don't we take a different route? I'll look at the map and see what we can do.
Dialogue D
A: I can't believe how bad the weather is today!
B: Yes, according to the weather report, we will be flying through a pretty nasty storm.
A: Won’t they cancel the flight? I don't really like flying in this kind of weather.
B: Cancel? No. Boarding has already been announced. Don’t worry. Usually the pilot gets enough altitude to fly above it. I am sure everything will be fine.
A: I hope so.
A—2 The manager's furious....get these papers, make copies and send them to our partners.
B—5 Sorry, Ms West. I overslept...take your seat and open your book at page twelve.
C—3 the traffic is so slow...traffic jam... Why don't we take a different route?
D—1 Won’t they cancel the flight? Boarding has already been announced.

Пояснение
Speaker A. I know that lots of student don’t like exams. They would prefer school without tests and exams at all, but I don’t it’s possible. Exams helps to major the progress we’ve made and helps us to understand what we have to improve. Students usually need some motivation to learn and exams are very effective way to make them study.
Speaker B. I have already taken 2 exams. I learn English as a foreign language. In the end of my course in the language school I had to take an exam. At first I was afraid of that, but then I managed to concentrate on the task. I made a few mistakes, but my grade was ok anyway. Later, when I had to take an exam in my art course I didn’t worry about it at all and everything went fine for that one too.
Speaker C. If you want to pass your exam successfully, you should remember a few points. The first one – revise all the material you’ve learned, but not on the night before the exam. That night you should have a good sleep to be able concentrate on your tasks. Second: have a walk before you go to your classroom, it will help you to feel more relaxed.
Speaker D. It was my first exam and I feel frightened and uneasy. I’m quite good at mathematics, but there in the exam room I couldn’t concentrate. The first task took me much more time than it was supposed to. And I simply didn’t managed to complete the test on time. My grade was very low, I didn’t get a pass and I have to take it again in a month.
Speaker E. It could sound absolutely crazy for most students, but I don’t mind exams at all. More than that: passing the exams makes me feel good. It’s like doing sports to me, I have to make some afford to receive the result. And if I manage (and in the most cases I do) I feel very proud of myself. High grades motivate me to learn further. Low grades, if they happen, make an area to improvement.
A−1: some students don't like exams... they don't want to pass them... but I think they are effective.
B−2: I had to take an exam... I've made a few mistakes... everything went fine.
C−4: before exams ... revise the material... havea good sleep... have a walk before getting to the classroom.
D−5: I was frightened... I couldn't concentrate... I didn't manage to complete the test...
E−6: I don't mind exams at all... They motivate to learn further... it's like doing sports.

2) brother and sister.
3) close friends.

Neil: Hi! I often see you here. Why don’t you go home after your lessons?
Alexandra: Oh, I just enjoy doing my homework in the school library. It’s quiet
here. And nothing distracts me. And you are Neil, aren’t you? You
are my brother’s classmate, right?
Neil: Yes. Max and I are classmates. And we also play for our school
football team.
Alexandra: I’m Alexandra.
Neil: I know. I often see you and Max on the school bus together.
Alexandra: Yes, we live far from the school and the bus is the only option.
Neil: You are in Ms. Clark’s class, aren’t you?
Alexandra: Yes. She is our Science teacher.
Neil: You are lucky she is your teacher. She taught us too, and I’m still
keen on Science. Though not as much as on Maths.
Alexandra: I love Science, especially the lab experiments. But Maths is too
difficult and boring to me. There are too many things you need to
remember.
Neil: It requires concentration, that’s true. But what doesn’t? Even in
French classes, we need to remember all those endless grammar
rules.
Alexandra: Are you going to university after school? Like my brother? He wants
to be a surgeon and wants to study medicine.
Neil: I know. Max is very ambitious and I think he’ll be a good doctor, or
anything else. He could be a good manager as well. Or a lawyer. I’m
not like him. To be frank, I’m crazy about cars and motorcycles.
Alexandra: Are you?
Neil: Yes. And I’m pretty positive about my future job. I’m going to work
in my uncle’s car service, as a mechanic. I actually often help them
there when I have time.
Alexandra: Oh, Max mentioned you worked miracles with his bicycle. It’s better
than a new one now.
Neil: Tonight one of my friends is arranging a pizza-party, in my honour. I
fixed his electric bike which had been broken for a year.
Alexandra: Wow! Now I know who to call when anything is wrong with my
bike.
Neil: Please do. And, sorry, Alexandra, I must be off right now. I’m almost late for my training.
Alexandra: Are you going to the stadium, with Max?
Neil: Yes. You know that we train every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
And there’s no chance of skipping a day now. Our coach is very
strict about everything as we are playing in the semi-final next
Sunday.
Alexandra: Good luck then! And tell Max not to be late for dinner. Our
grandparents are coming.
Neil: Ok. I’ll remind him.
You are my brother’s classmate, right?... in the school library. It’s quiet here. — Yes. Max and I are classmates. I often see you and Max on the school bus together. Александра в другом классе, Нил является одноклассником ее брата, но ребята встретились в школьной библиотеке, а еще вместе ездят на школьном автобусе, значит, они товарищи по школе, schoolmates.

Kevin: Hi! I’m Kevin. Can I sit here?
Kate: Yes, sure.
Kevin: And what’s your name?
Kate: Kate.
Kevin: Is this your first visit to Paris?
Kate: Yes, I’m from Canada and this is my first visit to Europe or anywhere else. I’ve never been abroad before and everything seems very exciting. And where are youfrom?
Kevin: From Liverpool. My family’s lived in that part of England for ages and we seldom travel anywhere either.
Kate: My parents are completely different; they travel a lot because of their job, but they’ve never taken me with them.
Kevin: I see.
Kate: But this time we are travelling all together as a family. Today we are going to have a guided excursion of the historical part of Paris. Are you here on your own?
Kevin: No. It’s a school trip. The whole class are here and two teachers to supervise us.
Kate: Oh, it must be interesting travelling in a large group.
Kevin: Yeah. We were awarded this trip when we won the city competition.
Kate: Was it a sports competition?
Kevin: No, it was a competition for school rock bands.
Kate: You’re a musician?
Kevin: Sort of. In our band I play the drums.
Kate: Do you see music as your career? Everyone nowadays wants to be either a celebrity or a computer genius.
Kevin: Not in my case. Music is just for fun. I’m deeply interested in physics and biology. I think that absolutely fantastic discoveries are awaiting us in these fields. They could completely change our idea of the universe and of ourselves.
Kate: So, you want to do scientific research?
Kevin: Exactly.
Kate: But that means getting a very good education…
Kevin: Yes. This is my last year at school and I hope to start my university course this summer. I’ve got good grades and it makes my plan sound quite realistic.
Kate: Yes, it looks like a good one. You seemto have planned your life very well. I can’t even make up my mind on what souvenirs to buy for my friends back home…
Kevin: I’ve found a shop with some old photos of the city. I bought several pictures there as gifts for my friends. They’re not expensive and the images are lovely.
Kate: Yeah, I think that would be better than heavy souvenir mugs or T-shirts with prints. Could you tell me where the shop is?
No, it's a school trip...

Alexander Bell’s mother taught deaf people to talk.
1) True
2) False
3) Not stated
4)
Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell was a famous scientist, teacher of deaf people1 and inventor, who is widely known for the creation of the telephone. His father, grandfather and brothers had all been associated with work on speech, and both his mother and wife were deaf. The family greatly influenced Bell's life and work, making him look past people’s disadvantages and find solutions to help them.
Alexander Bell was born in 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland. As a young child, Bell received his early schooling at home from his parents. At the age of 10 he asked his father for a middle name like his two brothers. For his 11th birthday, his father allowed him to adopt the middle name "Graham", which was the surname of a close family friend. However, for most of his life he remained "Aleck" to close relatives and friends.
Alexander attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh, which he left at age 15, completing the first four forms only. He was not a good pupil, to the disappointment of his father. His main interest was in the sciences, especially biology, and he was indifferent to other school subjects. After graduation from university, Bell became his father's assistant. He taught deaf people to talk by using his father's system.
Both of Bell's brothers died of tuberculosis. In 1870 his family, in search of a healthier climate, moved to Canada. Soon, Alexander was invited to Boston to teach at Sarah Fuller's School for the Deaf, the first such school in the world. Throughout his life Alexander Bell continued to educate deaf people.
From 1873 to 1876 Bell experimented with many inventions, including an electric speaking telegraph (the telephone). The money for his work came from the fathers of two of his students. One of these men had a deaf daughter, Mabel, who later became Bell's wife.
In 1876, at the age of 29, Alexander Bell invented his telephone and in 1877, he created the Bell Telephone Company. By 1886, over 150,000 people in the U.S. owned telephones. Later, Bell company engineers made numerous other improvements to the telephone. However, Bell considered his most famous invention an interruption to his real work as a scientist and refused to have a telephone in his study.
Although Alexander Graham Bell is most often associated with the invention of the telephone, his interests were extremely varied.
The magazine Science was founded in 1880 because of Bell's efforts. He took part in creating the National Geographic Society and became its second President. He was also involved in hydrodynamics (the study of the forces of water), and projects related to the development and design of aeroplanes. Alexander Graham Bell had 18 patents granted in his name alone and he shared 12 with colleagues. Bell's inventions included a metal jacket to assist in breathing, a device to locate icebergs, a metal detector, and investigations on how to separate salt from seawater.
Bell died at the age of 75 on August 2, 1922. His contribution to the modern world and its technologies was enormous.

You have 30 minutes to do this task. You have received a letter from your English–speaking pen friend, John.
...I like summer because I can give as much time as I want to my hobby — reading. I know it sounds strange nowadays. Why do teenagers read less than their parents did? What kind of books do you like reading? What do you do in your free time?...
|
Write him a letter and answer his 3 questions. Write 100–120 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.
Пояснение
Dear John,
It's nice to hear from you. I didn’t know that you like reading!
I think that nowadays teenagers read less than their parents because of the internet, computer games and social webs which take too much time. But I like reading and try to read regularly. I like to read short stories, because their final is usually unpredictable. Also I read some classic novels, in my opinion it’s important to improve your erudition and vocabulary. Besides reading I do sport in my free time, and never forget to spend some amount of time with my friends.
I would like you to recommend me some book that you lately read and liked. Let me know the title!
Write me back.
Best wishes,
Emma

One day a young man who lived near the lake in a small American town asked himself, “Why can’t people ski on water if they can ski on snow?” With his brother’s help he constructed several models of skis to test his ideas. He experimented on the local lake for a few days and created skis suitable for the water. This happened in 1922. The young man, who was only 18 at that time, didn’t patent his invention. However, he performed a lot of shows across the country that made him and the sport of water skiing popular. Later, he was recognized as the creator of a new sport – water skiing.
Water skiing equipment has been greatly improved since that time, and the number of people who enjoy this sport is growing in many countries.
