Speaker A
In this day and age there are so many things you are expected to do online! If you
don’t own a computer or a tablet you cannot even do simple things like book a
hotel or get a doctor’s appointment. And even if you do get a computer it takes
forever to figure out how to use it. It can get very frustrating for people my age. I
cannot help but envy my young grandchildren and the ease with which they
navigate this virtual world of theirs.
Speaker B
I love my touch-screen phone. The best thing about it is that there are always so
many things you can use it for, especially when you have nothing else to do: listen
to music, take pictures, play video-games or text your friends. Sometimes I have to
spend a long time on a bus or a train or wait for my parents while they are
shopping. My phone is my best friend in these situations.
Speaker C
I hate social media. I’m not a very sociable person in general, but when every 5
seconds your phone lights up with a new notification or message from one of the
hundreds of social media networks that you’ve joined, it’s just unbearable. When I
come home I just want to relax and avoid talking to people instead of having them
follow me into my private life. But these days you are expected to be part of this
nightmare and if you are not, you might miss some important information.
Speaker D
I’m 45 years old and I’ve been a gamer ever since I can remember. Over the years
I’ve seen a lot of innovations in video games. The first video game console you
could hook up to your TV was very primitive by today’s standards. The graphics
got better and better on later game consoles and then computers. They went from
2D to 3D, becoming more and more realistic and believable. Now we have virtual
reality. It’s very exciting for me to get to feel like I’m actually in the video game
world.
Speaker E
I cannot imagine how people lived even twenty years ago. Nowadays it seems
impossible that life could exist without the Internet, social media, mobile phones,
etc. I personally couldn’t survive without them. Even though I know I probably
shouldn’t, I keep finding myself reaching for my phone every 5 minutes to refresh
the feed on my FB, Twitter or Instagram accounts. All in all, I end up spending
hours on end reading, liking, sharing and commenting on people’s posts. I guess
I’m addicted!
Speaker F
Modern technology is great! A single mobile phone or tablet can substitute for an
entire office! Now when I’m travelling I don’t feel disconnected from my work.
There’s hardly anything I cannot do as long as I have a stable Internet connection. I
can send e-mails, take part in video-conferences, and be available 24/7 if the need
arises. It’s a dream come true for a true workaholic like me.
A — 7: It can get very frustrating for people my age. I cannot help but envy my young grandchildren and the ease with which they navigate this virtual world of theirs.
B — 1: The best thing about it is that there are always so many things you can use it for, especially when you have nothing else to do: listen to music, take pictures, play video-games or text your friends.

E — 2: Even though I know I probably
shouldn’t, I keep finding myself reaching for my phone every 5 minutes to refresh the feed on my FB, Twitter or Instagram accounts.
F — 6: It’s a dream come true for a true workaholic like me.

Now we are ready to start.
Speaker A
Our trip with this company started with manually dragging our boats round the
first Beginner’s Luck rapids. Well, I fell onthe rocks while doing this and injured
my elbow. This company has a strange viewon safety! Our guide, with 9 years of
experience, did nothing to prevent our boat from being turned upside down,
throwing all three of us into the water. So I am begging you: do yourself a favor –
please use another boating company!
Speaker B
This trip isn’t about being rowed down a river. You will paddle, feel pain and get
bruises. You wear a helmet and life jacket for a reason. You needto be at a basic
level of physical fitness; there is some climbing up and down rocks and on uneven
ground, and it’s slippery. You need to paddle sitting in an awkward position. You
have to be able to get up and down quickly. You haveto listen and respond to
directions. If you really can do that, sign up!
Speaker C
At the end of the day, don’t be lazy. We’re all tired; we’re all sore and bruised, so
what? Help take your boat up. Not doing that is considered rude. And please don’t
be pessimistic, gloomy or unpleasant because it may annoy the people around you
who are trying to hear the guides and havea fun day with family and friends. Kids
can go too, but they need to be at least 90 pounds, or atleast twelve years old, and
they need to be good swimmers and listeners.
Speaker D
I’ve gone with this company twice nowand I enjoyed it both times. There are
several rafting companies out there but you won’t meet personnel as qualified as
you meet here. These people are doing what they love. I would not take these trips
without a guide as I’d kill myself. They get you down safely and allow you to have
fun between the rapids! Food was good and every time wepassed another outfitter,
it became evident we chose the best one!
Speaker E
There is a common assumption that life jackets keep yourhead above water at all
times. WRONG – they are constructed to be able to float in water, so in any case
you will pop to the surface. But waves and river currents are strong enough to take
you under water for brief periods. A good rafting company typically provides a
course on how to breathe strategically in rapids, but most beginners usually forget
all that in the panic of being in the water.
Speaker F
I almost got killed in a white water rafting trip. This is how it happened. I rafted a
very fast river. The guy in front of me lost his footing, banged into me and we both
fell in. Our boat panicked, so we were rescued by another one 10 minutes later. We
were heavily injured and I was barely conscious. My life jacket did NOT protect
me from going under the crashing pull of white water. Don’t listen to those who
say that rafting is safe, it is dangerous!
A−2: This company has a strange view on safety. Our guide did nothing to prevent our boat from being turned upside down.
B−4: You need to be on a basic level of a phisical fitness.
C−7: Please, don't be pessimistic, gloomy or unpleased...kids can go too...have fun with your family and friends.

Speaker A
I am not much of a cinema goer but I do enjoy a good film. I usually buy a film online and watch it at home. I’ve got a wide screen TV and a projector. Sometimes, if I am in the mood, I use it. You feel as if you were in the cinema but I find it a bit cozier on my sofa. It’s also a lot cheaper to watch films at home. If I invite some friends, they bring popcorn and drinks and then you really can't tell the difference.
Speaker B
The cinema is my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to become an actress. I would watch all the new musicals and children’s films and dream of playing the leading parts. When I was in my last year at school, I took acting classes to prepare for the New York Theater and Cinema Academy. After graduating, I auditioned at the Academy and got in! It was the happiest moment of my life, even more so than getting an Oscar two weeks ago!
Speaker C
Books are much more fun than films. I know most film directors want to make a film out of some classical book but so often the film versions don’t turn out well. At least to my taste. When you watch a film you are forced to believe what you see and when you read a book, you can imagine the characters and have your own personal experience with the plot. Watching a film just doesn’t trigger your imagination the way reading does.
Speaker D
I can’t remember the last time I was at the movies. I think it was the day I broke my arm. Crazy as it may be, I broke my arm going to see a new film. My girlfriend had asked me to go to the cinema with her, so I bought the tickets for Friday night. We were meeting inside the Star Cinema. It’d been raining hard and the pavement was very wet. I was five minutes late for my date, so I hurried up the stairs and slipped. The last thing I remembered was the terrible pain in my arm
Speaker E
I never miss a new film. I have a notification sent from the local cinema to inform me about any change in their shows. They change the schedule once every two weeks, so I go to the cinema every other week. Our local cinema is rather small, so
they show two or three films at a time. Sometimes I watch a film every day for three days in a row to see all that’s new in the market. It does get expensive sometimes, but it’s worth it, the way I see it.
Speaker F
The theatre has more of an appeal to me than the cinema. I would go to see a play more often if they had more theatres around where I live. Local theatre companies have only two shows a year and that doesn’t satisfy my appetite, so I travel to London to see different shows may be once a month or so. Seeing real threedimensional people on stage is a lot more interesting than watching them on the screen. I love watching actors’ facial expressions and the interaction between them.
Speaker A — 2. You feel as if you were in the cinema but I find it a bit cozier on my sofa.
Speaker B — 7. The cinema is my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to become an actress... After graduating, auditioned at the Academy and got in! It was the happiest moment of my life, even more so than getting an Oscar two weeks ago!

Speaker A
I had a great time in Britain and the family I stayed with were very kind, I was
studying in a small city, but the family lived just outside - they were farmers,
so instead of being in a typical English semi-detached three-bedroomed house
like all its neighbours, I was surrounded by fields and animals. I had to get
myself some waterproof boots and stuff to go out and help with the cows! A
totally new experience for a city girl like me!
Speaker B
The people where I stayed must've been quite well off - the old house where they
lived was enormous. There was an old lodger living there as well - he must've
been almost as old as the house and all he seemed to do was eat and sleep (in the
biggest bedroom, of course). We didn't really get on, though I really liked the
family themselves. Oh, and they had these great dogs - they kept bouncing
around and wanting to play.
Speaker C
I didn't really like the house I was in. The people were OK and the food was
just about edible, but the house itself was freezing. My room was enormous
and impossible to heat so I used to go to bed wearing all the jerseys I'd brought
with me. Nobody else seemed to have a problem, so either they were used to it
or I just couldn't cope with the contrast to my own country.
Speaker D
I wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived in Britain, except that I knew that
British people were very cold and the food was awful. Well, in fact, the family
I stayed with could not have been more friendly and I never felt like a stranger
in their house. And I think I enjoyed nearly every meal I had, as well. In fact,
cooking has always been an interest of mine and I came home with lots of new
recipes, so it just shows how wrong you can be!
Speaker E
Well, my landlady was a professional cook, so I expected the food to be good -
and it was - but unfortunately I never really enjoyed it because her two cats
were always in the dining room while we were eating. Now, I love animals – I
breed rabbits in my spare time – but not on the table in the middle of dinner, if
you see what I mean. ... Apart from that, though, the other occupants of the
house were charming.
Speaker F
After spending a week in Britain, I quickly learned that cultural differences were
only a fraction of what made homestays challenging. How well you adapt to the
family you stay with is the result of various factors. The constant in this equation is
your ability to accept and overcome cultural differences; norms that are apparent
throughout the society as a whole. The second, more important element, is your
ability to adapt and relate to the individual family.
А4 — the family lived just outside — they were farmers,
D3 — must've been quite well off (to be well off — быть обеспеченным)
C7 — My room was enormous
and impossible to heat so I used to go to bed wearing all the jerseys I'd brought
with me.
D1 — Отрывок описывает, что все стереотипы по поводу недружелюбия людей и плохой еды, имевшиеся у говорящего, были опровергнуты, все оказалось не так. "it just shows how wrong you can be!"
E6 — I never really enjoyed it because her two cats
were always in the dining room while we were eating.
F5 — ability to accept and overcome cultural differences.

Speaker A. What is something that really troubles me? Well, like everyone else these days I worry about earning enough to pay my monthly bills, my rent and all the other current living expenses. I’ want to be secure for the future and make sure I will have everything I need and maybe start saving some money. I am so afraid of losing everything I own.
Speaker В. What do I worry about? Oh, about a lot of different things — money, politics, the weather. But my greatest concern is my mum and dad. I have a good job with a foreign firm and I am living overseas at the moment. I am so worried about them. I’m afraid they won’t be able to deal with all their problems. If anything happens to them when I’m away, I won’t be able to come back home quickly enough to help.
Speaker С. I think my biggest worry today is my career. I’m 26 now and I’ve spent the last few years travelling. Most of my university friends have settled down. They work hard and have made a good start to their careers. So I began to worry that when I go back home I will be too old for companies to want me. What shall I do then? That’s a tough question. I do not want to be unemployed.
Speaker D. Every time I look in the mirror I feel nervous. I am afraid of getting fat as I love pizza and hamburgers. I like shopping a lot and always buy sweets. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it. Like any other woman in her thirties, I am really afraid of gaining extra kilograms.
But I just can’t say “no” to cakes and sweets. Who can?!
Speaker Е. What am I afraid of? Well, recently I visited a friend of mine in Shanghai and she made a comment that I thought was very interesting. She said I look as though I have plenty of money. I don’t, but compared to ordinary people in the street I look like I have a lot of money. I am really afraid of someone thinking that I have a lot of money and trying to rob me, especially if they have a gun. I have a little bit of paranoia about guns and robbers.
Speaker F. I guess I worry about the usual things, like getting in shape for the summer or being healthy and fit. I think being healthy is the most important thing. So I exercise regularly and watch what I eat. You know it’s all about getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals, and fibre. I need this body to last at least another fifty years.

Speaker A. I am trying to read at least one novel a month. It’s part of my “intellectual” diet. The diet includes Music, TV and even Play Station but I try to keep a balance overall. There are times when I get seriously into a new writer and am distracted until I’ve read everything. On the other hand I can spend untold hours on Final Fantasy or some other game if it engages me. But as with a food diet, the odd chocolate binge won’t hurt you as long as in the long run you get a good balance.
Speaker B. I would like to say I love reading Dickens if it were true — but I just can’t get down to it. I saw a TV version of David Copperfield and enjoyed it but it is the language in the books I find really difficult to cope with. All the sentences seem so long and complex. I suppose it’s just that Dickens belongs to a different age, when people spoke and maybe even thought differently. On the other hand Shakespeare’s language is difficult for me, but it doesn’t spoil my enjoyment of that amazing dramatist.
Speaker C. I was sat in that armchair that Granddad made. Somehow I felt myself slip back in time as I turned each page. I became conscious of my heart beating. Probably it was the room, the furniture, the decoration; but that book took me somewhere else. I even felt the temperature in the room drop and expected to see Peter Quint staring sightlessly from the garden window.
Speaker D. I never watch a film based on any book I have already read. Susie always does and yet she always seems to end up saying “not as good as the book”. On the other hand it is quite useful to see films based on books that you ought to read but don’t want to. Shakespeare or Dickens on film is a great help. You get a red hot story without having to get lost for days in archaic language. On this, Susie and I are in complete agreement.
Speaker E. Some people say that conventional books have had their day. The technology has been surpassed. Like vinyl records and tape cassettes were to music — the traditional book will be replaced by i-phones, online delivery or through some other multi media platform. They say that one day we’ll no longer read words on paper stuffed between cardboard covers. But I am not so sure. On the beach or in bed, on the train or at home I like to curl up with a good old fashioned, comfortable, paper filled book!
Speaker F. Beck recycles all her books. It’s a nice habit. Where ever she is, when she reads the last page, there she “sets the book free”. This means that she writes on the inside cover a message of invitation to whoever happens to pick the book up next. I happened to get one of hers last week. She wrote “this book is a love story. You’ll not be able to put it down until the very last word”. And as usual she was spot on. I hardly got any work done last week finishing that damn story!
A−5: It’s part of my “intellectual” diet. The diet includes Music, TV and even Play Station but I try to keep a balance overall.

Speaker A. On my arrival in Tokyo, I spent a night in a traditional Japanese hotel. It was a terrible experience. My window opened onto the narrow dirty street, which lay between two buildings. The opposite building was so close that I could touch it. I looked out of the window and saw the sky, which was as grey as the building in front of me.
Speaker B. We stayed at the Bay Island hotel, which was a pleasure, as it faced the sea. The colour of the sea was blue, a colour that I had not seen in any of the beaches in India. It was calm and beautiful. I was happy about the fact that we were going to spend 10 days in such a beautiful place. All we had to do was sit in the open restaurant, look at the sea, enjoy the cool breeze and feel good.
Speaker C. During my trips I had to sleep in hotels, hostels, at Bed and Breakfasts and at friends’. Staying at your friends’ is the best thing to my mind, but if you don’t have any friends who are willing to give you a bed for the night, you should go to Bed and Breakfast. Those which I visited had nice rooms and very friendly hosts who were very proud of their home town.
Speaker D. We landed in Guatemala City at 10 p.m. I went through customs and hoped to see someone from the nearby hotel. I had booked my first night there. But nobody was meeting me. I didn’t know the way to the hotel, so I got general directions about how to get there from a policeman. It was about 200 meters from the airport. They had not received my booking, but luckily they found a room for me.
Speaker E. On my arrival in Japan one of my friends took me to a performance of Japanese classical dance and music. My attention was taken more by the evening audience than by what was going on the stage. It was very strange that there were almost no men at the concert. Later I found out that Japanese women, even if they are married, usually go out by themselves, or with their female friends. It is the norm here.
Speaker F. I can say that staying in hotels in Hong Kong as well as shopping costs a lot. However, visitors can have a wonderful time and they don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money. I always stay at a youth hostel, which is much cheaper than staying at a hotel. I have my meals either at a fast food restaurant or cook breakfast myself at the hostel. One of my favourite experiences in Hong Kong was taking a noisy tram back to the hostel from the horse races at night.

Speaker A. I’m a very forgetful person. That’s why I have a daily planner. I put everything there. Birthday dates, homework, medical appointments. If I take it down in my daily planner I’ll never forget about it. The point is, if I don’t I’ll never remember about it. My friends tease me all the time about this, but I probably do take my diary out of my bag more often than my mobile so I never get offended cause it is so true about me.
Speaker B. My mum sais, I live in a total mess. My desk is chaos with sheets of paper everywhere, with different reminders like: “Bye milk” “urgent” or “phone Lissie” or whatever. Strange if it may seem, I feel comfortable around all this stuff and can easily find whatever I need. As soon as I have done something I through the piece of paper away and that’s it. It’s pretty handy actually. If you don’t through pieces of paper away though, it will get you into trouble.
Speaker C. I’d tried many things, really. There’re piles of undo diaries and daily planners in my room, I simply forget to take them with me. But I have found a perfect solution. There is a thing that I will never ever forget to take with me as I leave home. This is my cell phone. I bought one with bill and daily planner, it works like magic. I can’t imagine my life without it now. It even gets beeps every time I have to do something, which works magic. At least for me.
Speaker D. I must say, I don’t do anything special to remember what I’ve planned to do. I have a pretty good memory which has never failed me. I just try to make an effort, I memorize it all each time I need to. This is probably do to my genes as my parents and my sister have an excellent memory as well. So, it kind of runs in our family. I really shouldn’t be boasting about it, because it isn’t my achievement or success. I was just born with it.
Speaker E. Each morning I make a long list to do. In the morning my memory is fresh and I can clearly remember all my plans for today. I put it all on the piece of paper and as soon as I have done something I immediately tick it or cross it. It gives me a strong sense of satisfaction which I enjoy, but this method so to say isn’t perfect as it doesn’t help with people’s birthdays or other special dates. So I’m thinking of how to improve my method.
Speaker F. I know what I do is very childish, but I can’t help it really. I put some pen marks on my hand or a palm, so I see them and remember about it. My parents regard it as strange and untidy but I find it so convenient. The only problem is when you wash your hands, your inscription can vanish and you may never remember what was there. My parents say they’ll give me a permanent marker, but I think that’s too much. They are joking about it anyway.
